World Music Village @ Victorious Festival, Portsmouth 23/24/25th August 2019

The eclectic, entertaining and exciting World Music Village returns to Victorious Festival for 2019. Curated by the International Children’s charity Arms Around The Child there will be a return from old favourites and fresh vibrant new performances to get you dancing and grooving into the festival spirit.

The Village is opening for the first time on Friday 23rd August so be prepared for a long weekend of generous sounds and activities to fill your days.

Saturday brings an array of talent to the stage with a return of the increasingly popular 9 piece The Urban Voodoo Machine creating their unique brand of Bourbon soaked Gypsy Blues. Later The Dhol Foundation mix it up with DJ’s, Dhol Drummers, Tabla and Guitar bringing us the sounds of Bollywood and Bhangra.

Sunday presents music from Africa to South America, Jamaica and beyond. The ever-popular Salsa Dance Workshop offers the chance to learn dance moves to the Latin grooves of Toca Bonito. Africapella and Fellowship of Groove turn up the African vibes, and the evening culminates in a Reggae Dance party with the legendary Zion Train flying in from Germany who are one of the most unique and enjoyable live dub acts on the planet, their use of dynamic onstage dub mixing whilst performing alongside acoustic instruments and vocals, make them one of a kind. The Majestic, featuring the legendary vocals of Baba Ras and Mangoseed with their enthralling fusion of Ska, Soca, Jungle and Funk will provide the energetic not to be missed support.

Throughout the weekend be sure not to miss The Sages with their strong and melodic East Asian influences. Local favourites Los Hombres are back with their Latin fuelled festive sounds, and an exciting new addition to the Village, The Uni Big Band, will be playing some classic Jazz, Samba and Bossa Nova numbers. Look out for performances from dance groups, including Urban Nigerian, Bhangra and traditional Chinese Dance, and join in with the Drum Workshops, Yoga and Tai Chi.

 

 

The World Music Village has partnered with sponsors BIMM (British, Irish, Modern Music) and will showcase some of the up and coming fresh young talent on Friday night and throughout the weekend. Look out for LibraLibra, RAHH and Just Like Fruit.

The People’s Lounge in The World Music Village are looking to push the boundaries again this year, after the unique DIY renegade gigs with the Sounds of Refuge, Simo Lagnawi and The Turbans in the pouring rain last year.

With the bonus of an added day on Friday, there’s a jam-packed line-up of Hip-Hop, spoken word, Funk, Jazz and Experimental sounds ready for this year’s instalment.

On Saturday local Hip-Hop hot property Omar Baba and funkateers Slick Minded Individuals are both back, bringing the grooves, lyrics and high energy.

Sunday will lay host to some of the finest musicians from across the South Coast as The People’s Lounge prepares to host a day of Jazz, Funk and Soul.

Local Jazz guru Robert Milner will be joined by special guest musicians playing a fusion of Jazz and Globally inspired sounds. The Southsea Groove Collective with Rich Muscat and Tash Aladdin will be sure to get the tent shaking, Muttnik will get pulses racing with there high energy Jazzy melodies and Funky rhythms, and BeatRoot Funk will raise the roof with there large, loud and fun horn section.

Be sure not to miss The Rhythm Earth Trio’s Victorious debut, the Jazzy and Soulful house Band from Southsea’s successful La Havana Club nights. Catch Global Sounds Portsmouth, local Arts Council funded music project, performing music from Tanzania to Iran, Lithuania to Nigeria. And join in with Tai Chi and Drumming workshops in the mornings.

Experience some fresh, creative, cosmic and incredible quality words, sounds and musicianship in this little pocket of festive and cosmic joy.
